78 Years of Industry Expertise In 1937, Edwin F. Averyt and J. Clifton Judy started Mutual Accident Company in Columbia, South Carolina and sold their first product – accidental death coverage. Their first sales team was comprised of mostly local women. They could relate to the struggles others were going through and talk with them about their financial protection needs.
In 1939, the company became Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company. The mission then was the same as it is today – to help America’s workers preserve and protect the vitally important things they work so hard to build.
We’ve continued to evolve over the years: In 1955, we introduced worksite marketing of voluntary benefits through payroll deduction, and that first payroll deduction account remains a Colonial Life customer to this day.
In the 1970s, we implemented computer technology long before most companies did. In the 1980s, we began marketing our products through Section 125 and introduced electronic enrollment capabilities nationwide.
In the 2000s, we created our online enrollment system. Today, we continue to add innovative enrollment technologies and options.
After 75 years of business, we remain dedicated to our mission of finding ways to help America’s workers when they face unexpected events and challenging times. With over 88,000 businesses and 4 million policyholders, Colonial Life strives every day to earn the right to be hailed as the most reputable voluntary benefit carrier in the nation. More than $1 Billion in in-force premium. Growth in 2014 was 11.3%, in 2015 exceeded 7%, in 2016, exceeded 10.3% and in 2017, was over 7%

Whitfield Benefits Solutions - Alaska's Colonial Life's District
Colonial Life's history in Alaska goes back 44 years when Colonial Life policies were established in the North Star Borough. Fast forward to 2013, and Alaskan business owners were fortunate to have a local sales office representing Colonial Life in Midtown with Pamela Whitfield and her agency, Whitfield Benefit Solutions.
Since expanding her agency to Alaska (from Puget Sound) Pamela secured a team of professionals to provide "choice" to employers with regard to voluntary benefits. Involved in the community and contributing to local organizations (the Alliance, ASHRM, AAHU, BBB, Anchorage Chamber, ALASBO to name a few), the agency currently has over 175 businesses that rely on her local "team" to provide outstanding customer service and unique solutions to businesses and their employees.
Pamela Whitfield is the agency owner of Whitfield Benefit Solutions, and a 20+-year veteran of voluntary benefits. Pamela started the FIRST Anchorage based office in Alaska in March of 2013 and is still the original Colonial Life agency in Alaska with the prestigious award of #1 Business in Alaska by the BBB in 2016-2017, ranked in the "Movers and Shakers" list in 2017 and one of the authors of the article "Protect, Employee's Health, Finances and Future with Ancillary Insurance" in the December 2017 Alaska Business Magazine.
While other agencies may emerge to sell Colonial Life, the Whitfield Agency is the first and largest agency in Alaska with over 175 clients and over 3200 employees.
